The Tetra Vent Splitter

Tetra Bio Distributed is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating open-source solutions to cost-prohibitive medical technology. In March 2020, a group of engineers, designers, project managers and medical professionals gathered on Helpful Engineering to develop a ventilator splitter in response to the shortage caused by COVID-19.

As a co-founder and sole industrial designer on the team, I was responsible for every design element of the Tetra Vent Splitter, as well as company branding, graphic design and web design.

The Tetra Ventilator Splitter extends a single ventilator’s capacity to treat up to four patients.

With individual airflow control and monitoring, the Tetra Splitter addresses concerns of tidal flow control, respiratory virus spread, and ethical medical choices.

The mechanism features an LCD screen displaying readings for each patient, giving medical professionals more insight and control than analogue splitters used during the first wave of COVID-19. Designed as a last-resort solution, the Tetra Vent Splitter provides doctors with an alternative to denying healthcare due to a resource shortage.
